  • Description
Kornél Divald (Eperjes/Prešov, 1872 – Budapest, 1931) was born from the second marriage of Károly Divald, a photographer in Eperjes. He developed an interest in art history during a trip to Rome in 1891. After he was forced to drop out of university due to the atrophy of his auditory nerves, he became self-taught. As an associate of the Hungarian National Museum, he researched the architectural heritage, applied art and folk art of the Felvidék (Upper Hungary) until 1918. His journeys of the region enriched the collections of many museums in Upper Hungary, but he shipped valuable medieval works of art to the Hungarian National Museum as well – a significant portion of which is now displayed in a permanent exhibition at the Hungarian National Gallery. Following in his father’s footsteps, his work as a photographic artist was also significant. He created literary works under the pseudonym György Tarczai. Became a corresponding member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1911.
