  • Description
Art historian Endre Csatkai (1896–1970) received his university doctorate in 1925. Between 1932–1937, he self-published three volumes on the architectural heritage of Sopron County. After World War II, he was tasked with rebuilding the ruined Sopron Museum. In 1952, he became a member of the Permanent Committee on Art History at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Published in 1953, his volume titled Sopron és környéke műemléki topográfiája (The topography of the architectural heritage of Sopron and its environs) earned him the Kossuth Prize. From 1955 until his death, he was an editor at Soproni Szemle (Sopron Review); he was on the board of editors from the very beginning of the high-standard journal. The majority of his bequest, his library, as well as the enormous amount of cards on the history of art collection in Hungary – which he’d written over the course of his life – became a part of the Local History Collection of the Sopron Museum.
To support Endre Csatkai, Lajos Vayer (1913–2001) commissioned him in the 1960s to make cards (regestae) on the history of art collection in Hungary – a topic that Csatkai had been delving into for decades anyway. Vayer later gifted the submitted material to Katalin Sinkó, to help with her thesis.
