Art historian Júlia Szabó (1939–2004) studied art history and English at Eötvös Loránd University between 1957–1962. Subsequently became a museologist at the Department of Graphics at the Hungarian National Gallery. Research associate of the Research Group (and later, the Research Institute) for Art History at HAS from 1969. Also the head of the Art Collection of HAS between 1994–2004, and editor of the series Művészettörténeti Füzetek (Cahiers d’histoire de l’art) of the Research Group (later Institute) of Art History between 1971–2002. Received the Pasteiner Gyula Medal in 1985. Became a holder of a candidate’s degree of art history in 1994. Her area of research was Hungarian and European art in the 19th-20th centuries.
One part of the fonds is related to naive art, consisting mostly of catalogues, prints, photos, negatives, journals and correspondence. Miscellaneous documents related to the series Művészettörténeti Füzetek, and material on Hungarian avant-garde art are also part of the bequest. Also contained therein are studies written by others, opponents’ reviews, notes, collected material, bibliographies, manuscripts and letters.
