  • Description
    Árpád Tímár (1938–2017) majored in Hungarian Literature and Linguistics, Art History and Philosophy at the Faculty of Humanities at Eötvös Loránd University, obtaining his diploma in 1964. Was a research assistant at the Institute of Philosophy at HAS between 1964–1970, then a research associate, and later a senior research associate at the Research Institute of Art History (previously the Research Group for Art History) at HAS between 1970–2009. Head of the Archive of Hungarian Artists (the so-called “Lexicon Collection” of the Institute) between 1992–1997. Became a candidate of art history in 1994. Editor of the Institute’s journal Ars Hungarica (1973–1980, 1997–2010), deputy editor-in-chief of Művészet (Art, 1979–1981), later an editor of Új Művészet (New Art). Member of the Section of Philosophy and Historical Sciences, as well as of the Academic Committee on Art History, both at HAS. His area of research was the history of 19th-20th century Hungarian fine art, art criticism and writings on art history. Participated in creating the 5th, 6th and 7th volumes of the A magyarországi művészet története series of handbooks (The history of art in Hungary). His awards: Opus Mirabile Prize (1994), Hauser Arnold Prize (1996), the Fülep Lajos Prize of the Soros Foundation (1997), Németh Lajos Prize (2000), Ipolyi Arnold Medal (2005), the Golden Cross of Merit of the Republic of Hungary (civilian division, 2007).
    The fonds contains Árpád Tímár’s university notes and miscellaneous notecards, along with articles, studies, lectures, exhibition opening speeches, peer reviews, manuscripts and summaries of theses written by him, as well as articles and studies written by others, on the topics of his research. His private and professional correspondence, invitations, exhibition brochures, prints, newspaper excerpts, miscellaneous photographic material, photo albums, notes, documents, membership and other cards.
