  • Description
    József Jakovits (1909–1994) was a self-taught painter and sculptor. A member of the so-called Európai Iskola (European School) of Hungarian artists. Associate of the State Puppet Theatre between 1950–1955, then associate of the Kisfaludy Károly Theatre in Győr between 1955–1958. Lived in New York from 1965, then moved back to Hungary in 1987. Received an Outstanding Artist Award in 1990. Became a member of the Széchenyi Academy of Literature and Arts in 1993. First started exhibiting his works with the other members of the Európai Iskola (European School) in 1946, as well as participating in other group exhibitions in Budapest and the countryside, and later even abroad (New York, Boston). Aside from sculptures and paintings, he also created graphics, photo montages, linocuts and screen prints. He has works in the Hungarian National Gallery, the Municipal Gallery, the Kassák Lajos Museum and the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs. He was married to Júlia Vajda.
    His diary entries, recorded between 1952–1990, contain poems, his writings, memories and other thoughts.
