Sándor Tóth (1940–2007) received his diploma in Art history and History from Eötvös Loránd University in 1966. At first, he utilized his expertise on the Middle Ages in the field of architectural heritage preservation. Then in 1974, he became a lecturer at the Department of Art History at Eötvös Loránd University – a position he would hold for three decades. From 1990 until his death, he was an associate of the Old Hungarian Collection of the Hungarian National Gallery, where he mainly researched medieval stone carvings. In this period, he participated in the preparations of almost every major exhibition. His scientific oeuvre is accompanied by a rich, four-and-a-half-decade-long publication history.
